Make an MMORPG Game

As we briefly mentioned in our game type break downs, this is the least recommended type of game to build as an individual or as indie devs. Not only is this category of game an immense amount of resources to get off the ground, the upkeep is also a huge burden. Many well established game companies have bankrupt themselves trying to create a hit in this genre.

But if your goal isn’t to make money from this endeavor. And is based on learning or having a fun project to work on with friends. We would be more than happy to point you in the direction of some great resources.

As always, we work within Unity. So we are apt to suggest some great assets to get you up and running right away within Unity.

It would be impossible to suggest a list of great mmo tools without bring up uMMORPG. Developed by VIS2K, and at around $20 it is definitely the most value for your buck. created with care from the ground up, it’s lightweight, its easy to build anything upon the core, and simple to overwrite anything you need to replace.

Did we mention the same creators also have an engine to deal with these same things in a 2D style of an MMO? Pretty hard to not be impressed with that. Which is also set at a very affordable price point. uMMORPG 2D

Now if you’re looking to get into this even more in depth, and you have money to spare on such an undertaking, look no further than Atavism. Now this is the juggernaut in game creation. It’s primary focus is an all in one MMORPG game platform.

Your one stop, game in a box

In the future we will have a post detailing in specifics why this is such an incredible asset. It goes beyond just a MMORPG platform. If you’re building any large game projects, this is a great starting point. Featuring, but not limited too:

  • Built in data base system
  • Instancing
  • Accounts management
  • Mobs/NPCs
  • Factions and guilds
  • Quests
  • Dialogues
  • Items
  • Skills and abilities
  • Currency modules
  • Weather System
  • Pets
  • Races and classes
  • Inventory management
  • Socials
  • And on and on and on…

As with any good RPG, your MMO is no exception. You will need a robust inventory management system. And for that, our go to is once again Inventory Pro. If nearly 400 five star reviews isn’t enough to convince you on this asset, I don’t think anything would.
